The British actor was delighted to move to Los Angeles for his role as vampire Bill Compton in the TV series, but his plans for a life in the sun were dashed when he was told he needed to maintain a pale complexion.
He said: "I couldn't wait to live by the beach and enjoy the weather, then they dye my hair and make me stay out of the sun. I was banned from sunbathing."

Stephen - who stars in the show with his fiancee Anna Paquin - remains close to his family in the UK, but admits he can't bear to watch his raunchy TV programme with them.
He told The Sun newspaper: "I haven't watched 'True Blood' with my mum. It's too saucy. The opening sex scene in series two is pretty full on."
Stephen also admitted he has had some bizarre fan encounters since he started in the show.
He explained: "They grab you and think it's OK to touch you - girls, ladies and men. They want to be bitten and want you to break their skin.
"I have been sent underwear. A german woman sent me pictures of her naked on a white horse."
