Prince Philip's birthday note

2 months ago 18th Jul 14:00

Britain's Prince Philip sent a special birthday message to an ice skater he admires.

The prince was reportedly a frequent visitor to Anne Rogers' shows in the 1950s and sent her an 80th birthday message to show he had not forgotten her.

The note, which was read out to guests at Anne's birthday lunch in Ascot, Berkshire, said: "I was very pleased to hear that you are celebrating your 80th birthday today. Many congratulations and I hope you enjoy the day with your family and friends. Philip."

Anne added to Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Wasn't it lovely of him to remember after all these years? He came often to see me skate and he always asked to meet me after the show. He was friendly, encouraging, knowledgeable and - well, of course - devastatingly handsome and attractive."

I was very pleased to hear that you are celebrating your 80th birthday today. Many congratulations and I hope you enjoy the day with your family and friends. Philip.

Anne also revealed some of the discussions she used to have with Queen Elizabeth's husband.

She said: "I remember that when I skated for him in charity performances in aid of the Duke of Edinburgh's Playing Fields Scheme, he talked a lot about corns and warts, which seemed a subject of particular interest to him."
