In recent years the British film industry has enjoyed a stream of success with movies such as 28 Days Later, London to Brighton, The Queen and Atonement all doing well both critically and at the box office, with some also finding success in America, continuing the long standing tradition of high quality British movies.
As well as good movies we have also seen a rise in stars breaking out of the UK and into Hollywood including Keira Knightley, James McAvoy and Kate Winslet, who have all enjoyed major success with a string of box office hits between them and recognition at some of the industry's highest award ceremonies.
This week sees the release of another Brit flick Donkey Punch, the debut feature by Olly Blackburn, that took the Sundance Film Festival by storm.
As an ode to the British movie here at FemaleFist we take at look at some of the finest movies produced by our film industry over the years.
The Third Man (1949) is a British film noir directed by Carol Reed and starring Joseph Cotten, Alida Valli and Orson Welles.
Joseph Cotten stars as unemployed pulp-novelist Holly Martins. When he arrives in post-WWII Vienna on the promise of a job from his old friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), he finds that Lime has recently died in a dubious car accident.
Against the advice of British sector authority Major Calloway (Trevor Howard), who accuses Lime of criminal behaviour, the indignant Martins decides to stay to investigate his friend's death.
