Wang Jian, 28, from Fuzhou - who had secretly been having diving lessons for months - took his girlfriend, Xie Wenzhen, to visit an aquarium and told her he would get them drinks, before jumping in the tank and proposing from underwater.
Xie said: "Suddenly a boy holding a bunch of flowers appeared in the water, and two other divers behind him opened a scroll, reading: 'Please marry me!' I was totally stunned, as I realised the man in the tank was my boyfriend."
Xie kissed Wang through the aquarium glass to signal her acceptance.
